"Why is there actually no piece of furniture that is a learning tower, high chair, and play furniture all in one?"
From Idea to Product
… I asked myself, when our children started to discover their environment. For example, while cooking. Our daughter was still too small to sit on the countertop next to me. And if she had to watch from the floor, she was unhappy.
I wished for a child's chair that would support us in our family life in a versatile and creative way. A learning tower that is flexible enough to also be used for playing. A high chair in which the children feel completely comfortable. A piece of furniture that gives us all joy for many years. And one that meets our standards for quality, natural materials, and good design. A true favorite, in other words.
Since we couldn't find such a chair, we built it ourselves with a carpenter friend and named it "Zaunkönig" (Wren).
According to Montessori principles
Safely protected on all sides, our daughter began to help us chop, sort, and stir, making us laugh with her first words—so this is what Maria Montessori meant by "help me to do it myself." Together now meant more than just stacking building blocks; it meant being together in everyday situations.
The children also used the Zaunkönig in other ways: as a bench, for climbing, for building dens, and for hiding. The Zaunkönig gave them a whole new sense of freedom. The freedom to discover the world independently while always feeling safe and secure.
A piece of furniture for life
Friends who visited us were delighted with the "Zaunkönig". Our parents also insisted on having one for when the grandchildren come to visit. After a long search, I found a small chair workshop in the Ore Mountains that now crafts the "Zaunkönig" with the finest craftsmanship. With great attention to detail, using wood from sustainable forestry. Chairs so sturdy that they will easily last for the next generation or the one after that.
The materials come from nature and feel really good. They help our children to grasp the world in the truest sense of the word. Over time, they change and gather traces of life. Now that my children are a bit older, these traces remind me of all the beautiful moments we had together – cooking, eating, crafting, reading, and building forts.
Design for Kids & Parents
When I think back to how I chose the phrase “No matter what you have planned, it’s better together” for my newborn label, I am still delighted today. Because, today as then, I feel exactly that: It’s not about what we do with our children, but with what attitude. Mindful, at eye level, connected, and always open to the small and large adventures.
Today, I am proud to have created a label with ZAUNKÖNIG® that stands for design, function, and sustainability. For truly good products – timelessly beautiful, long-lasting companions in our lives.
